From Wiki: Zvíkov, often called "the king of Czech castles", is a castle in Zvíkovské Podhradí municipality, about 15 kilometres (9 mi) north of Písek in the South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. It stands on a difficult-to-access and steep promontory above the confluence of the Vltava and Otava rivers. The castle is one of the most important early-Gothic castles in Czech lands.
The area was inhabited as early as prehistoric times, when the Celts built a fort here in the 1st century AD. The current castle was built in the first half of the 13th century, most probably on the orders of King Ottokar I, but the exact date is not known. The first written mention of the castle comes from year 1234 and owned by the Kings of Bohemia.
Well . . .my Tyrrell ancestors were part of the Anglo-Norman invasion. So I would think the Irish would destroy those castles. 😉 The only Tyrrell castle still standing was the one belonging to my 25th great uncle, Richard Tyrrell at Tyrrellspass. It’s a restaurant now. I went in and took pictures. I tried to see my 25th great grandfather’s castle outside Dublin, Castleknock, but it was behind fencing and hills of dirt. Apparently it was undergoing a preservation effort so we couldn’t go near it. 😕 It was in ruins and unsafe, thus the preservation efforts.
I've just read that England only had recognisable castles *after* the Norman invasion - because they had to build SO many to keep the Brits (and Welsh, oh and the Scots) under some kind of control. We are a rowdy lot!

Ugh. Yet one more beautiful place I don’t get to live in.
Sorry......

Gorgeous! I got to visit some castles while we were in Ireland this past week, none were that beautiful though.
Mostly ruins...? Destroyed by the English...?
