I've heard of it.... Its interesting that electric (and STEAM!) cars existed around the same time as petrol & diesel. The tech level of all kinds was certainly comparable... It'd be quite the different world if petrol hadn't have 'won' the race!
They're fairly common in Alt-History steampunk novels. Not exactly sure how practical they were/are but I don't think that they'd be 'off the table' realism wise.....
Indeed. Just *imagine* an extra 100 years of electric car development! plus of course the other fallout effects of battery technology etc... It could be a very different world - not forgetting Global Warming & wars over oil...

Turtledove did a book (The Two Georges) where "steamer" cars were a thing..
