This was interesting point in David Liss's "Ethical Assassin" novel .....prisons took those who were restless and made them irredeemably violent/antagonistic so they could never be taken seriously as dissenters of the system.
Prison is an odd institution... What is its function? To simply separate bad 'guys' from the public? To punish? To redeem? Its almost as if they don't know what they're meant to be doing....
