As far as I know, this is an image of St Catherine being broken on the wheel (hence Catherine Wheel fireworks) and it seems to be on St. George's Collegiate Church, Tübingen, Germany... (although Google is giving me some different information!)..
Indeed it can. Often beautiful though. I do often love church architecture & design. I always visit them when I'm somewhere new. I've been in some AMAZING ones in Europe.

Church art can be really gruesome sometimes !
