Some people spend so long in front of those things you'd think they're getting paid to be there. Beats the alternative, though. My local walmart ripped its out because of theft -- though the employees' story is that customers kept nagging them about having to use the machines. You don't go from 90% self-check out to 10% checkout in a week because of old people who find it insulting to scan barcodes. Those same people might be old enough to remember the days when they told clerks what they wanted and the clerks went and got it for them -- none of this self-help business. (Of course, post COVID there IS a service for clerks to fetch items and then bring them to your car!)

I use them when I'm in a hurry or only have a few things. It does surprise me though how people Q for the only available till (I tend to shop locally in a quite small supermarket) rather than use the available self service. There was a (brief) experiment with *total* self service but that was pretty much a disaster so they got people back. The local crew seem to spend the majority of their time stacking shelves rather than serving customers. Its only a matter of time before cheap machines can stack shelves for them - and that will (mostly) be the end of shop staff!
