I undetstand that if they sign up for military service they're fast tracked for citizenship.

Funnily I thought of Starship Troopers when I read that [grin].

Yeah... those Mexaricans are good enough to pick our tomatoes or die in our pointless war, but not good enough to qualify for real citizenship.

People say they should "go through proper channels" but those proper channels are pretty much closed to poor Latin Americans now. They're fleeing poverty the likes of which does not exist in this country (except maybe in a few Native American reservations).

I personally think that those against citizenship for these folks are of two basic kinds: Pat Buchannans who want to keep America for the "Americans" - you know the type. And then the corporate interests that benefit from being able to deny these people living wages and benefits.

Interestingly enough, I saw the rally in Chicago yesterday and there were a lot more American flags than Mexican flags this year. There was a big backlash last year against the marchers for carrying "foreign" flags (i.e. - you want to live here but won't consider yourself "American")... seems they're learning...

Exactly, our crazy immigration laws make it pretty much impossible, and not just for Latinos. I personally know a Canadian citizen and British citizen, both in their early twenties, who want to live here but can not. Our immigration laws are insanely stupid.

Then you have people who say, "If they break the laws to get in, their more apt to commit crimes when they are here." Which is stupid logic because the laws they are "breaking" to get in are merely government red tape laws. It's not as though they are victimizing anyway. It's like saying someone who fails to renew their drivers license is more likely to go on a crime spree. After all, they've broken the law!

One more thing though, this poster and your comment about Buchanan the the typical "corporate interests" do a nice job of pinning anti-immigration laws on the republicans, but NOBODY does a better job of restricting unskilled labor from entering job markets than the labor unions, which last time I checked are pretty left-ist in nature.

Actually, I think unions would probably welcome the additional dues paid, don't you? ;)

In addition to our immigration laws being overly-complicated and obstructionist, it's also insanely expensive to hire an immigration attorney to handle the paperwork for you. If they're coming here to flee poverty, hello, who's going to pay the lawyer to do all that complicated paperwork?
