That's exactly what is happening. Young men are not finding jobs and are enlisting. If the government is going to employ so many of them, much better use of their skills (and much less risk of their lives) would be in public works projects. Our country has a crumbling infrastructure that is not being replaced. Before long, more disasters are going to happen like the bridge collapse in Minneapolis a few years ago.
my hope lies in finding a job in entertainment and media. I'd like to shake things up, though, and not get caught up in the hollywood/advertising machine...

There does seem to be a definite link between economic downturns and war..... I suppose that wars in times of recessions gives the unemployed somewhere to go and the government isn't scrabbling around for men & women to send to foreign conflicts.

I expect so. Government funding does appear to be rather disproportionately spread around....

Well, I *was* going for provocative... but anyway.... [grin]

Oh, I expect that there will be lots of doors open for you... At least you have an idea of what you want to do with your life which is a big head-start. I'm still not sure what I want to do for a living....
I agree with dbackdad, some of that recovery money should have gone to public works projects and putting people to work, not into the pockets of banks and investment firms who got greedy.

Indeed, unemployment is a good reason to start a war !
