Though if Afghanistan were consuming as many American lives as Vietnam, I doubt people would have tolerated it this long.

(As for Afghani lives...well, they never make the news, so far as anyone is concerned they're doing fine and dandy.)

It's the drip, drip, drip effect. People gradually get used to the news of a soldier dying on Monday and another later in the week. Of course after enough have died this is used as an excuse to make their sacrifice count for something by 'staying the course'.

What little news we do hear about or from the locals is usually stories about schools being built and life returning to normal. If progress was being made on the scale they talk about on TV then why are we still fighting there 10 years later and plan to be there another 3 or 4 or 5 or...... If this is winning I wouldn't like to see what defeat is like.
