“Being an atheist is nothing to be apologetic about. On the contrary, it is something to be proud of, standing tall to face the far horizon, for atheism nearly always indicates a healthy independence of mind and, indeed, a healthy mind.”

Richard Dawkins.

You know, until my early 20's at least, I hardly gave my atheism a second thought. I've known I was an atheist for as long as I can remember but it was never a matter of pride or a feeling that set me apart from those around me. As far as I can remember the general attitude to most things religious was indifference. I became a bit more outspoken when I went to university as it was there that I began to bump into more people who believed and wanted to talk to me about it. This normally did not end well. I did eventually calm down and move back into general indifference - now with more knowledge to back up my views - and its been like that since then. I will put up a robust defence when challenged but I honestly can't be bothered to fight any more - not that my atheism is on the ropes or anything (far from it) but that I've decided that arguing about it is just about as pointless as it gets.

As to atheist pride...... I certainly feel comfortable in my atheist beliefs (or lack thereof). I certainly feel that I have a better appreciation of reality than those who believe in God. It doesn't make me feel smug or anything (although I've been accused of that more than once) but it does make me feel right. I suppose that's something to be proud of.....
