Agreed, always sounded strange to me. There's a lot of conjecture on the internet about it, but I suspect there are millions of Americans who love Sting, and think that's the way people like their toast in the UK.
Although it doesn't explicitly say that it's browned on both sides it's certainly implied. To be honest I've never heard of one-sided toast. To me that wouldn't be toast at all.
Some thought it was a reference to a toasting fork, toasting bread over a fire. Others seem to think he says "I like my toast done on the side.", like he likes it with his tea.

Double espresso is my favorite.
I never picked up the coffee habit. I tried it a few times in my early teens and really didn't like the taste. I liked the smell - just not the taste.
Over the years I have had the odd sip (mostly by accident) and still don't like it.
I get my caffeine hit via Diet Coke, Coke Zero and Pepsi Max.... and Vanilla Coke too now its back on sale here after a 6 year absence.
I've recently rediscovered coffee, due to long hours at work. I used to drink it with cream and sweetener, but now drink it black.
I love tea as well, I usually add sweetener to it.
I drink Diet Coke, etc. in restaurants, but sometimes will do unsweetened iced tea.
I'm reminded of the line from Sting's song Englishman in New York.
"I don't drink coffee I take tea my dear
I like my toast done on one side
And you can hear it in my accent when I talk
I'm an Englishman in New York"
Mike quoted: I like my toast done on one side.
How weird! Half toast, half soggy bread..... Yuk. That'd actually make pretty crap toast..... [lol]

Each to their own I guess... [grin]
