One of my favorite parts of the movie is when Tarkin is scandalized that Leia would lie to him about the rebel base on Dantooine, despite the fact he got that information....by lying to her about blowing up Alderdaan!
It is the way of The Empire. Also (as with such things) they had some of the coolest ship designs, uniforms and - of course - the Imperial March which is excellent.
