i remember crawling uner my desk in the third grade, participating in an atom bomb attack exercise... some of our neighbors built bomb proof cellars in their back yards...
We never had a 'duck and cover' culture here - though I did my schooling in the 60's and 70's so might have missed it. Part of the reason I'm sure is that we had no more that 4 minutes warning of a Soviet launch and not even us Brits can organise a polite evacuation in that time. Plus our targets (AKA cities) are too close together so if a nuke missed one it would just hit the next one over. I do remember an American general complaining about operating in West Germany though.... he said that it was so densely packed that the urban areas where only 50 kilotons apart.

Um, duh. Get inside a refrigerator. They're lined with lead, so they're totally atomb-bomb-proof.
Dunno about hydrogen bombs. May want to test it first.

Could you have managed an impolite evacuation? "Oi! Move your arse or kiss it goodbye!")
Impossible - especially at the height of the Cold War. Today it'd be every man for himself and God help any women or children who got in the way.
