The blackouts were scheduled in advance and we had a gas cooker so we had heat (in the kitchen) and always had hot food and, more importantly, hot cups of tea to see us through....
The Three-Day Week was one of several measures introduced in the United Kingdom by the Conservative Government to conserve electricity, the generation of which was severely restricted owing to industrial action by coal miners. The effect was that from 1 January until 7 March 1974 (also the same month the 1973-74 oil crisis ended commercial users of electricity were limited to three specified consecutive days' consumption each week and prohibited from working longer hours on those days. Services deemed essential (e.g. hospitals, supermarkets and newspaper prints) were exempt. Television companies were required to cease broadcasting at 10:30 p.m. during the crisis to conserve electricity, although the restrictions were dropped after a general election was called.
we get this every winter due to wind/snowfall... i've been meaning to get a genset but haven't yet... we have a woodstove for heat and cooking but water is a problem...
@ Mudpuddle: I suppose that if it's a regular occurrence you get used to it and can plan for it. Those 4 months in 1974 seemed very strange indeed although, as I was just turning 14, I suppose that they were a bit exciting too - not so much for my parents though!

CyberKitten--of course. Hot tea will get one through any crisis.

CyberKitten--I now drink tea regularly, instead of coffee.
