Around 100 years ago it was quite common for Gentlemen (and women) to carry guns for their own protection. Even after WW2 officers kept their sidearms (probably their own anyway) on return from war. I don't know when carrying guns became far less common (or why). It's another aspect of British/European culture that I know almost nothing about.
