@ Mudpuddle & Stephen: It is indeed London post-late 1939. The 'bump' in the middle is where the Shaftesbury Memorial statue/fountain is (often called 'Eros') which was removed for the duration of the war and returned in 1948. I found a couple of other things interesting: there are very few road markings, road signs or any pedestrian crossing (aka zebra crossings) which presumably came much later. The buses also look like their lights have been modified to be used in blackout conditions. I do love old photographs like this. You can learn so much from them if you know where to look.
