I see what you mean... but it's more likely to be a shell strike as they didn't have torpedoes (as we know them) during the American Civil War.
The painting represents the battle between CSS Alabama and USS Kearsarge June 19, 1864, off Cherbourg, France. I was amazed when I first read about this. I never imaging that part of the US Civil War was actually fought in the English Chanel!
