A comment on a TV series in the 80's (I think) had a profound impact on me. A bunch of school kids were given the challenge of growing a tulip in a jar. At the end the main character in the drama didn't win anything as her flower wasn't really very good. The teacher soothed her by saying that winning didn't matter. So the girl - about 8 at the time - said "If winning isn't important then why do they give prizes?"
