It is insane. Even when I tried to buy as many used books as possible, my textbooks were never less than $700 a semester. And one semester was especially bad because there were almost no used books available. I graduated in 2005 with my Bachelor's and 2011 with my Master's. I can only imagine the costs now. It's such a scam.
I didn't buy any text books for my first degree. The College library was pretty cool so I didn't need anything else.
I bought books for my Master degrees but I was working full time then and I only did it because the University library was a 40 minute train journey away.
@Mudpuddle, you've lived such an interesting life so far!
Fortunately, as a history major, my books were really cheap on Amazon (used!) once I'd cleared the hurdle of my first two years, when I had to take science and math classes with expensive texts. I note that those Pearson Labs books -- which seem to have a monopoly on a lot of uni science/math texts -- are internet based and can't be gotten used. Another layer to the racket.

i didn't have to buy many for my first degree (auto mechanics) but the texts for my bs in geology were ridiculous!
