No idea what it is they're holding. Looks mechanical but nothing jumps to mind. They're actually wearing 'lobster' armour plate which was tried out by both sides in the war. Far too heavy for combat use though!
On further 'research' I think it's a captured enemy (presumably German) machine gun - probably from the remains of the crater the incoming shell made....
