Luckily I spent most of my working life insulated from 'customers'. Probably the closest I've ever been was a few years on 2nd Line Support on an IT Help Desk. In the later part of my career my 'customers' who I dealt directly with with my opposite numbers in our sister organisations so we were mostly on the same page most of the time and understood each others positions pretty well. We did, from time to time, need to hint at the threat of "no hotdog" but I don't think we ever needed to go through with it!
