School has far too much testing and not anywhere enough teaching it seems to me. Especially problematic when test results are in any way linked to funding. That's a definitely recipe for future problems!
I can understand why test results would be linked to funding (idealistically, rewarding excellence and effectively punishing inadequate teachers), but it creates perverse incentives. I'm grateful that there's a growing classical-education movement in the US to create private schools on pre-Dewey lines.
@ Stephen: Of course there would be no need or demand for private education if State provided education was good enough - which it should be if its funded properly.... [grin] But then I went through a State system until I was 18 and it didn't seem to do me much damage - or at least nothing that wasn't fixable with books & stuff.
