The way things are moving in the US right now (AKA Backwards) it's looking like there's going to be a bright future ahead for smugglers of contraceptives and condoms. Personally, if I was (much) younger and living in the States, I'd start stocking up around now if you can..... There's money to be made and pregnancies to be avoided.

They're not blocking contraceptives. They're not even banning abortion. This just returns the decision to the states on whether to allow it. The amount of hysterics is hilarious, as is the sudden return of people knowing what constitutes a woman. XD

They're not blocking contraception - *yet*. That's probably next on 'The List' followed by same-sex marriage.

Returning it to the States? Shouldn't the decision rest with women and medical professionals, rather than fly-by-night politicians? Plus the US is probably only a few years away from a national ban - at which point the States who decided NOT to ban abortion will be informed that its certainly NOT a States Rights issue.... [lol] It has zero to do with States Rights. It's about the age old desire to control of sex and reproduction.

I have been feeling for all Americans for a while with their lack of health insurance, free education etc. etc. But instead of trying to move forward, they move backwards. And let the people with big money decide about their lives. And are voting for them. Incredible.

I've never understood the American aversion to 'Socialised medicine'. Personally I think it's GREAT. In fact Socialism is pretty great all round.. [grin] But we can always point to the US as an example of what happens when money is considered more important than people I guess.

I've never understood how or why people vote against their own interests. America seems to being held hostage by a very vocal minority of around 30% of the population. I don't think it's going to end well but (hopefully) might lead to some root & branch changes *before* the whole thing crashes and burns.

I don't think this is understandable for anyone who can count up to three. They are told it's un-Christian to vote for the other party and accept everything the people from their party do, no matter what. I've had discussions with Americans who rather pay an arm and a leg for the education of their children than have higher taxes. They don*t want the state to influence their lives, they rather have money dictate it. Look at the discussion now. Abortions are illegal but they don't care what happens to the child once it's born. Not at all.

One of (the many) things I struggle to understand is when those on the Right (in the USA) say that they want government to stay away from their daily lives - and then say that government will regulate women's reproductive behaviour. What's worse is that either they don't see or refuse to recognise the absolute contradiction in those two positions. I think part of what they're missing is what comes next - and I don't mean the talk about restricting contraception or same sex marriage. They're talking about stopping people crossing state lines to gain an abortion or criminalising those who help people who do - like those driving the car or paying for the operation. So, how do you control that? Do you have people informing on their neighbours? Do you have people officially registering when they get pregnant so they can't suddenly *not* be pregnant? Will all miscarriages be investigated by the police as potential homicides? Will women be required to have medical examinations before travelling abroad? Where does it stop - or have we already seen that TV adaptation (Handmaid's Tale)?
