Did you ever try the Red Alert or Command and Conquer series? I've been amusing myself playing the Remastered edition (skirmishes only) the last few weeks. On some of the maps I've got tiberium set to grow so quickly that's legitimately an obstacle... it sharply reduces the amount of space available to build a base, and if you don't move move move shortly there's no space at all. On one map it reduces matches to infantry battles, simply because there's no time/space to build the tank factory building. Amusingly you can set up a Russia/Ukraine match, but I think they're both in the Soviet faction so the difference is marginal.
I was a bit late to the gaming party as I couldn't really afford a PC until I got my first job and settled long enough in one place but after that there wasn't much stopping me from being a full-time gamer. I've probably wasted YEARS of my life starring @ screens killing bits of light with other bits of light... [lol]
There are certainly worse ways, most involving gasoline and alcohol!
Red Alert 2 was my second RTS, right after Age of Empires II: Age of Kings. Probably pinpoints my gaming start rather nicely...(2000/2001, basically). Of course, the first PC games period were SimCity 2000, Star Trek Hidden Evil, and The Sims.
LOVED AoE. RTS games where my usual go to game style. Although I pretty much started 'proper' gaming with Doom (although the first computer game I ever played regularly was Pong back in 1974-5).
Total Annihilation was my other time vampire early on.
