Unfortunately, the people doing or calling for the banning of books have zero interest in the judgement of history. Presumably because they believe that, by banning certain books, they'll be able to control what people know about the past - in which they banned books....
@ Both: It does stagger me a bit - most especially as most of this stuff comes from a place supposedly based on freedom of speech and individual responsibility. Banning books is, at its base, a futile attempt to restrict knowledge and information from people. It is one group attempting to keep another (often much larger) group ignorant of some facts or viewpoints. It is an attempt to keep people in the dark about something. So, what are they afraid of? That people will have enough information to form their OWN opinions on something? Maybe opinions that are different from those attempting to impose the ban? So... in the so-called 'marketplace of ideas' they'll already admitting that their ideas are unable to compete.... Odd that....

Yup, that's exactly the reason, though they claim they want to shield the kids form evil or some such stuff.
Beautifully stated. Banning books is a good way to be counted as the bad guy and I think we all know that that's who is doing this to begin with!
Indeed. As the student rightly said, History does not look on with favour at such idiocy.
