I hope it's not just my age, but I do think of previous world leaders as having more understanding, more knowledge of the world around them. They knew their history, knew where things had gone wrong in the past and where and when the trends pulsing through the world had started. It wasn't just being briefed each day or paying attention to the news - it was understanding things at depth through reading chunky books by world experts and digesting/understanding them in a way you don't seem to see as much these days...

I totally agree. And the opposite is also true. All not so great leaders are not readers.

I think it's like everything, classics books, classic music, only the good ones stay in our memories.
