This is actually a recurring joke in some Catholic pages I follow on facebook -- semineurotic people using confession to obsess over the most minor of things, or sometimes people dwelling overmuch on their actions in general ("scruplosity"). Scruplosity exists outside religion, of course..
The whole thing has never made much sense to me. Thankfully my parents were indifferent to religion in general which is why they sent us to Church of England (Protestant) schools growing up rather than Catholic ones.
On a purely secular level, telling someone your burdens is a relief, and helps people process what they're thinking/feeling more effectively than just ruminating on it internally. It's almost as if things have to be expressed/voiced to be optimally processed.
Indeed. Just saying things out loud can help in some circumstances, even if there's no one else there to hear it. Talking about issues - even with minimal feedback helps too, hence the demand for psychiatrists and therapists of all stripes. It's good to talk.

LOL! That's hilarious...no need to explain why.
Whilst *technically* a Catholic I've (obviously) never been to Confession. I think my priest would be *really* bored by mine!! [lol]
