Don't you ALL celebrate Columbus Day? Isn't it a national holiday there? I suppose here we'd have William the Bastard Day. Doesn't really have the same ring to it....
It’s still a federal holiday in the US, but many businesses have employees take the holiday at a different time of year, and don’t call it Columbus Day. Then other places in the US have begun celebrating Indigenous Persons’ Day in place of Columbus Day. Our university uses the holiday around Christmas to give us a bigger block of time off around the holidays.
We had *some* leeway with holidays here, but generally they happen when they happen and even private businesses tend to have have little say in the matter. If people are needed (for whatever reason) to work on that holiday they're normally paid 'double-time' which can be a nice earner but I'd still rather have the day off!
My available leave from my last job was 31.5 days, plus national holidays. I did generally take 10 days over into the following year though - as I was notorious for not taking enough leave despite nagging from my boss!
