Costume drama can be very hit & miss (especially these days!) with more effort going into the costume than the drama - although you do get drama *off* screen too sometimes. It's when 'they' try to do something radical or they to 'make things more relevant for a modern audience' that things fall down. Personally, I don't watch a drama based in Regency England (for example) that has been 'brought up to date'. I mean... HUH?
Plus, of course, you need the right actors in the right roles. I had MUCH fun watching the 2005 P&P version with Keira Knightley. Not only was it very well done (IMO) but I loved watching and hearing the reactions of a packed cinema of 98% women - most especially when Mr Darcy walked out of the mist at the end. The 'sigh' at that moment shook the theatre... [lol]
Oh, and I picked this picture because it looked good.... [grin]

I remember dragging my mom to the theater to see this movie. It was such a letdown, but the costumes were pretty. XD
