AFAIK, there was a BIG turn away from 'ornamentation' from the 1920's onwards with Modernism & all that... Buildings were supposed to be 'functional' rather than decorative. There are *many* striking modern building (IMO anyway!) but I do LOVE the Gothic style as well as Victorian/Edwardian architecture. Buildings should be built for people. After all we use them & live in them so they should be designed for us - rather than just being soulless 'machines for living'.
