It's *basic* Capitalism - scarcity increases value. So, either there's not a lot of (or enough) parking spaces in Toronto or your skills just aren't in demand ATM. It might be time to retrain... or invest in parking spaces....
Basic economics, yes. Definitely against "investing" in more parking spaces. Per Donald Shoup (The High COst of Free Parking), the ideal parking fee is high enough to guarantee that there's always a certain percentage of open slots. If I had $5 for every wonderful building destroyed for #@)#)@) parking places, including in downtown cores....
I've seen a few interesting YouTube vids on parking space provision in the US. It seems (and is actually) quite crazy how the zoning is worked out/implemented! How to absolutely destroy an urban environment in one easy lesson....
