At the start of summer I always keep waking up at the time I usually would to get ready for school and I hate it. But obviously doing exactly this will help me go right back to sleep. Gradually it gets a little later but never much beyond 8.

If you've had enough sleep (rather than waking up because of habit) that's OK. If not you can have the pleasure of just turning over and going back to sleep for a bit. It did take me a while to get out of the waking up early habit... Now I just wake up when I'm ready - which is GREAT!

But my phone stays within reach of my sofa - NEVER in my bedroom (unless I'm using it as an alarm clock).

Yeaaah, my phone lives on top of the computer desk, well out of reach of my bed. I have fallen asleep a few times reading or redditing, but if I'm going to bed on purpose then the phone is far away. I don't touch it again until my Morgan Wade alarm clock goes off.

Indeed. The only things in my bedroom is a bad and various stacks of books. Beds are for sleeping in , and other stuff if you get lucky. If you want to watch TV or whatever then get your ass out of bed and go do it in an appropriate room I say.

That's the problem though, it is purely habit. I'm so tired during the day sometimes, and looking at my phone does not help one bit of course but I do it anyway because I am never able to go back to sleep. My phone also stays on my night stand any time Eleanor has to be at her father's house, for obvious reasons.

Yes, I can understand your phone being within easy reach when the kiddo is away from home.
