Election 2024.

WOW..... I mean.... WOW. Where do I start..............

Apart from a Labour AVALANCE and a complete Tory BLOODBATH, where do I start.....? The Conservative vote absolutely collapsed helped along by a comparative upsurge in the Reform UK vote - and Nigel Farage *finally* gets into the Commons on his 8th attempt.

Interestingly (and hilariously), ex-PM Liz Truss lost her seat despite previously holding a majority of 32,988! Unfortunately I missed the actual event as I finally went to bed around 6am this morning. Another loss I missed (damn it!) was that of Jacob-Rees Mogg who the BBC also seemed to have missed in the shuffle. Another loss for the Tories that might have interesting knock-on effects was that of Commons leader Penny Mordaunt who was tipped as a possible future leader of the Conservatives.

There's still (as I type) a handful of seats to finish counting, but Labour have a majority of about 170 which means that they do pretty much what they want - within the limits of the new reality. So, what now? Watch this space... [grin]

A lot of people who ordinarily vote Tory were so disgusted by their inaction in regards to immigration & economic growth that they voted for Farage as a protest vote. I'm sorry that Rees-Mogg didn't win his seat back: he's far and away the most entertaining MP to watch on youtube.

Oh, I think it was most definitely an election that the Tories lost, more than one where Labour won - their voting percentage didn't move very much overall. Quite a lot of Right leaning voters (who could no longer vote Conservative even holding their noses) did apparently vote for Reform. Interestingly, but not surprisingly, the highest Reform numbers corresponded to high Brexit voting. Then again, Reform are basically the re-branded Brexit party.

I would describe Rees-Mogg but I do like to keep profanity to a minimum here. Hopefully he'll fade fast and fail at something else. We can but hope.

I know nothing about your country’s politics, so, congratulations?

Indeed! The Tories are **GONE** - for at least 5 years and probably 10... Maybe even longer. That *alone* is very good news. Hopefully the new Labour government can turn this shipwreck of a country around and point us in the right direction again. I guess we'll see?

This is great news all around. Congrats. I hope they can hold it. I see the problem here in Germany where the conservatives blame all their faults on the new government. Good luck.

Starmer seems to have hit the ground running and has promised no 'honeymoon period', so we can hope. One of the first things he did (I think after being in office for around an hour) was to cancel the disgusting Rwanda scheme. So, he's off to a good start. It's not going to be easy though with the mess the Tories left the country in. Definitely interesting times ahead I think!!

Well, that's the same here in Germany. The coalition has done everything to try to get rid of the annoying parts their predecessors have done but not everything can be changed within a year of two. Again, good luck to your country. Maybe we even see you in the EU again. Hopefully.

It always takes a bit of time to clean up the mess left behind by the previous administration but at least the transfer of power was as efficient and trouble free as ever. It's quite brutal though - lose the election @ 5am on Friday morning and out of No 10 a few hours later! No doubt they were already packed to go [grin].

Its doubtful that we'll be back inside the EU during *this* parliament. With Reform UK breathing down Labour's neck and the fear of the Conservatives being infected by them resulting in the lurch to the far-Right. I think if Starmer does well and can keep a substantial majority for 2029 he *might* be able to negotiate returning. Plus a lot more younger voters who will want back in will be of voting age and a lot more of the oldies who wanted to leave will have died. Early days I think [grin]

They had a lot to clean up but the opposition started to blame them for everything from day one.

Congratulations!! I was watching pretty closely even when we were on vacation. Such great news. Hopefully Rees-Mogg is gone forever.

I imagine Rees-Mogg will go to 'Heaven' soon - AKA the House of Lords to be smug and obnoxious there instead.
