I can quite honestly say that without the games, I would never have seen the sky ...
... of Elentari, Eden Prime, Ilos, Dantooine and countless other worlds.
And there's always the cliche of "Go Places, Meet Interesting People ... and kill them" (from Jagged Alliance 2) Which is moderated by most of the games being easier if you play nice with the NPCs :-)
Indeed Pete... I have soaked blood - my own & others into the soils in many out of the way places. In fact I have commanded armies and conquered worlds.
Come to think of it I've blown up entire Galaxies before now....
Where, outside of computer games, can you gain that kind of experience (points).

Oh, there are some NPC's I'd *love* to play 'nice' with.
I've never been even remotely interested in video games (PacMan aside) yet almost every guy I know, is. Is there something about the way the male and female brains are wired that makes electronic games more appealing to guys?
I think that genetically and socially males are more likely to be hunter-killer types than women are - although I have known a few women who are *very* good at combat games.
Games, in general, are also designed to push our particular buttons - competitiveness, blood and glory etc.... They are also designed (by men generally) to be very adictive.
