Perhaps, but I don't think it's as true as the "Mad at traffic? YOU'RE traffic!"...partially because so much of "society" is created by our news and entertainment. They produce materials that shape our development in a certain way, we respond, they up the ante...

Indeed it is - but the people who create such things are also part of the society they both manipulate and entertain. People in general are expected to be passive consumers of such things. It would appear that the majority go along with it. However if a more critical approach was common, helped along by being given the tools for critical engagement with culture at an early age, such a thing would be impossible and society would be rather different.
Things have not always been this way. Things will not always be this way. We can change our society if we choose to do so. We are not the passive victims or would-be victims that some would have us believe. Our society is like this because we choose it to be like this. We are all to blame for its failings.
