An interesting shot...I've never seen a sailing ship without its sails, though here they've probably been taken down to avoid their being ripped to shreds.

People who went to sea in those ships were braver than I would could have been; I criss-crossed the Pacific on aircraft carriers, and that always reminded me of Samuel Johnson's quip, "Going to sea on a ship is like going to prison but with the added risk of drowning." Well, I think he said it, and I've paraphrased it.

Stephen - AFAIK sailing ships reduced sail as much as possible in storm conditions because, as you said, they'd be ripped to bits. This picture might show that [muses]

Agreed RT. The early sailing ships where TINY compared to almost anything these days, sailed in almost complete ignorance of where they were going (and often didn't know their location with any great accuracy) and still managed to cover the whole globe 'discovering' most of it by complete accident along the way.
