An interesting shot...I've never seen a sailing ship without its sails, though here they've probably been taken down to avoid their being ripped to shreds.
Stephen - AFAIK sailing ships reduced sail as much as possible in storm conditions because, as you said, they'd be ripped to bits. This picture might show that [muses]
Agreed RT. The early sailing ships where TINY compared to almost anything these days, sailed in almost complete ignorance of where they were going (and often didn't know their location with any great accuracy) and still managed to cover the whole globe 'discovering' most of it by complete accident along the way.
