Photo label: When facing a crisis, don't raise the bridge, lower the water.

@ Mudpuddle: I think it was the bridge the guy who bought the *other* one thought he had bought! [lol] This is Tower Bridge, London.

[Tower Bridge is a combined bascule and suspension bridge in London built between 1886 and 1894. The bridge crosses the River Thames close to the Tower of London and has become an iconic symbol of London, resulting in it sometimes being confused with London Bridge, situated some 0.5 mi (0.80 km) upstream. Tower Bridge is one of five London bridges now owned and maintained by the Bridge House Estates, a charitable trust overseen by the City of London Corporation. It is the only one of the Trust's bridges not to connect the City of London directly to the Southwark bank, as its northern landfall is in Tower Hamlets.]

As it looks like it's almost finished I'd guess that the picture dates from 1893/4.

@ RT: The Thames is a *very* tidal river and it's not unusual to see it this low. I guess the camera guy had to wait for the lowest tide to take the picture he needed from this angle.

Oh, I'm hardly an 'expert'. Part of the fact is that I simply live here (in the UK) so know stuff - either through direct experience, education or some sort of osmosis. The other part is that I Google things and (usually) cut & paste from Wikipaedia. [grin] Of course I learn stuff too which is fun.... [lol]
