From the tail colors and what looks to be the cross of Lorraine on the side, a plane in service of the French?

Yes. Well spotted. It's an RAF MK IV Bristol Blenheim in the colours of the Free French. By the looks of it the background is the North African desert so - probably 1941? The aircraft was pretty much at the end of its combat usefulness by then - at least in daytime - which is probably why we could give some to the French.

My affection for Joan d'Arc and her legacy at last proves useful! ;)

Any mention of the French and the North African desert immediately brings to my mind The Little Prince. Thanks for sharing a beautiful picture that is so realistic it almost gives me a bit of vertigo.

@ Stephen: LOL

@ James: Yes, some very impressive art work. I actually didn't know that the French flew in the North African campaigns. Research needed I think....! I read "Wind, Sand and Stars" by Antoine de Saint-Exupery about 2 years ago (as I think you know) so I can certainly get the link.
