Stalinist architecture did give Brutalism a bad name, I agree! But there's definitely *something* about raw, brushed concrete.... Maybe it's because I'm a big city kid from the 60's & 70's?
Maybe ... I grew up in the countryside and I prefer cozy cottages, preferably thatched, cuddly houses, as my son would call them. Mind you, I love some modern architecture, am a big fan of surrealism and therefore don't mind buildings that remind me of that at all.
And you are right, the books are kind of a consolation. LOL
At least this example of "Brutalist" architecture has a modicum of windows. At my alma mater in the last decades of the twentieth century they put up massive slabs of concrete with no windows facing the street. It did reduce the breakage during student riots, but it lacked aesthetic appeal.

That building is kind of terrifying.
Probably looks more dramatic from an ant's eye view. I bet its super cosy inside..... [grin] Plus it has BOOKS in it, so....

Concrete boxes have somewhat less appeal I think!
