You're probably not in the right age bracket to know this, but do British schools have anything like "Scholastic Book Fairs"? In the US that's a thing -- or was, at any rate -- where a big room like the library or something was taken over by displays selling children's books, along with things like bookmarks and such. We always loved going to them, and they're how I found series like the Boxcar Children, etc.
I don't remember anything like that at the schools I attended. But I haven't been in compulsorily education since 1976.... No idea I'm afraid if anything like that happens these days - or happens in posh schools or schools in middle-class areas....
