Rent in the US is an entirely different and more complex issue than just wages, partially owing to the skew of housing stock. Cities frequently won't allow for microhomes and ADUs thanks to building codes created for the suburbs; old buildings that are traditionally the basis for affordable apartments are left inactive by regulations that impose so much retrofitting that there's no point in even TRYING to activate the building; municipal zoning regs often frustrate attempts to build apartments; and because new housing is always expensive, contractors built for those who are willing and able to pay for mini-McMansions in subdivisions.

Besides, the people paying for lattes and avocado toast are middle-class sons and daughters of privilege. We working schmucks make our own coffee (or get it from the gas station for $1.25) and only encounter avacados when we're feeling rich and order a side of guacamole at the Mexican place.

I think that's exactly what this post is saying. Those who earn so little to pay rent, will definitely not buy expensive food. They are glad when they can buy enough cheap food to feed their family.

Yep. It's so fucking ridiculous. I really hate it here sometimes. Leaving is a dream...but also so expensive that I can't. Yet.

Marianne - this is very true but, but...SCOTLAND. I can live in the Highlands and have cute cows and traipse about ruins of castles forever.

..and with luck (and a Labour government for the next 10 years from July 5th) Scotland might end up re-joining the EU. Stranger things have happened........

I bet they have been kicking themselves since the independence vote these last few years when Brexit became a reality. Hopefully things work out for the better.

Amazingly there are STILL some people who think its been a runaway success! Not sure if its a sunk-cost fallacy thing or just them being delusional..

Some people have no brain.

People are indeed VERY strange!!

Some still blame it on the fact that the EU won't give them money anymore. LOL
