Well, America..... It seems that you have elected to live through a live Civics Experiment for the next 4-10 years..... The VERY best of luck with that. You're going to NEED it..... [shakes head]
The House and Senate both shifted red. I think you're missing how pissed off people are about the way things are going. One yuge union declined to endorse the Dems, and unions have been a lock-in for them since...the last century. Two major very-liberal papers didn't endorse Ms "Appointed without a Primary" Harris, and one of his allies -- Tulsi Gabbard--- is an antiwar reservist who has previously endorsed Bernie Sanders. The Democrats have completely lost touch with what people want, so consumed are they by the politics of division and identity obsession -- and they're contemptuous of people. Did you see those ads they were running? One ad is depicting women as being threatened by their husbands to vote The Right Way, which is utterly misandrist, and then another ad has a bunch of dudes who no one would confuse with masculine inspirations saying they were man enough to vote Kamala. They have lost the plot. This is their 2008 "Wow, we just got our asses kicked, we need to have a come to Jesus moment." I hope they do. However, I think they'll just take the "Wacist wacist wacist Putin Putin Putin" view.
One thing it does underline is that I clearly have VERY little understanding of your country. I do think if even some of Project 2025 gets implemented that people will regret their decision to re-elect Trump. It's going to be 'interesting' to watch from the other side of the Atlantic but I really don't think that things will go as well as some are hoping. We'll see I guess...
Trump doesn't have any connection to 2025. It was created by another organization altogether in hopes of supporting him and some conception of the "MAGA" movement, but it's not his. Trump is....his own agenda and it's sometimes in self-contradiction. I'm hoping the team he's assembled will mediate his more....easily-distracted and impulsive qualities. He's not dealing with RNC dinosaurs anymore: Vance, Vivek, Tulsi, RFK are all coming from VERY different trajectories, to say nothing of Elon. It's going to be wild. Hoping he doesn't go all-in for Israel.
"I'm hoping the team he's assembled will mediate his more....easily-distracted and impulsive qualities." Good luck with that. They could rein him in a bit during his first term, it's going to much more difficult this time around.
Plus he has pretty much total immunity from the Supreme Court.... He's going to do whatever the hell he wants to do.... with zero consequences and he knows it!
Harris was a very weak candidate, unfortunately. She's never been very popular and she completely failed to galvanize the more progressive side of the Democratic party, e.g. the former Bernie supporters. Biden was little better, but it was a massive strategic error on their part to shoehorn her in at the last minute.
Its going to be 'interesting' to see how things play out now. Whether or not its just a more radical phase or a step-change I don't know. Either way I think its going to be quite disruptive in a lot of ways. The BIG question is, I think, will be if people will like the result?
I think if Trump lasts 4 years (physically) then it'll probably be gradual changes. If, worst case scenario, Vance gets in in the next year or two, I would expect some pretty aggressive policy pushing by project 2025 et al. And I don't think people will enjoy that.
To think the Democrats could have put up Tulsi, a resolute anti-war candidate who left the dems (RECENTLY) because she realized how unhinged they were on war, identity politics, etc.
Personally, if the team delivers what it's promising, there's going to be a LOT of...disturbance. It's not possible to really begin disrupting DC without there being consequences, even if it's necessary. I tear down a wall in my house to let some light in or improve the layout, dust is going to get on stuff. It's going to cost me money. There's going to be periods where I can't have guests over. So, it's entirely possible the dems come back in 2026/2028, depending on how aggressively he pursues things and what the "dust" is.
That was my thought too. I mean, stopping vaccination? Yeah, THAT'S going to 'improve' things.... But, I guess we'll have to wait & see how crazy its going to get. The Ukraine war will certainly (or most probably) last longer & kill more people. Israel will be encouraged to be even more of a bull in a China shop (being *very* polite) and there will probably be a national abortion ban (States Rights? What States Rights?).... The shit is going to get REAL.
CK - don't be mislead by some of the bullshit spouted here. This is absolutely devastating to our country and the only people who will be fine are rich mediocre white men. Everyone else is screwed, including the poor mediocre white men who voted for this fucking shit show.
Trump is 100% connected to Project 2025 through Vance. Trump is dangerous because he is stupid. Vance is dangerous because he is not.
Oh, I'm confident that at least some of Project 2025 will be implemented and some more will be attempted. A few will indeed prosper from a Trump/MAGA presidency. I think for the first year or so his voters will like what they see. But I don't think they'll like it for long. A lot will think they won't be touched and a few will think that they can't be touched. I'm betting that both are wrong. The next 4-10 years are not going to be pleasant unfortunately.
About the only saving grace is that we can say TOLD YOU when the shit inevitably hits the fan. Plus of course people both within & outside the US will learn very important lessons about voting, politics, democracy and paying attention. One question that I did think about is this: how many people *didn't* vote in this election? I'm guessing it was a LOT.
Exactly. Anyone thinking trump is going to be better at this the second time around, when the first time around was such a disaster, is either delusional or benefits from his brand of 'politics'.
VV - they're both terrifying for different reasons and I hate it. The thought of another trump presidency makes me want to throw up. I had so many students asking me on Wednesday if they would get sent to Mexico - kids born here in the US even, who have never been to Mexico except maybe to visit family. And I don't know what to tell them, so we just hug. I will never forgive a single person who voted for them. EVER.
CK - But we all still have to suffer through the consequences of this. As much as I love saying "I TOLD YOU SO!" to idiots, this is one time I wish I didn't have the ability to do so.
As Stacy said, I'm with Dorothy. The biggest problem with elections is that some parties don*t do anything than finding fault with the other party. We've had that problem in Germany. The "Christians" governed for 16 years, they decided to stop nuclear power plants. When the "traffic light coalition" finished that, it was said by the "Christians" that it was the "Greens" who started it. And that's only one example. And the lower the IQ of people, the more they are inclined to believe it. That and it's all the foreigners' fault. You can trust, it's either the "Greens" or the "foreigners", never the others. And the same happened in your country with Brexit. Tell enough people that someone else is at fault for their situation and they will believe you.

Well, I think we can agree on the fact that it's going to be WILD!
I'm with Dorothy.
Indeed. I'm coming to the conclusion that America isn't what the world thinks it is - or maybe even what IT thinks it is....

I’m angry about how many people will die because of this election: Ukrainians, Palestinians, pregnant women, the poor, and there are many more.

Sarah, “Trump is dangerous because he is stupid. Vance is dangerous because he is not.” OMG! Truer words have never been spoken!

Too true unfortunately. It's *always* the 'Other'....
The easiest way. Blame someone else.
