People who came of age in the 20's to 40's definitely had a 'never throw anything away' & 'I can fix it (or at least try)' attitude. Plus, back in the day the average person might even have a shot of fixing something - unlike today.
Oh, my dad fixed everything. But they grew up in the war where people saved everything just in case. Unfortunately, they passed on that hoarding attitude to us, not always easy to get over it. But our boys keep us grounded. At least a little.
I'm definitely a bit of a hoarder (books don't count of course) and was horrified when I heard the idea that you should just throw out boxes that are unopened after 'X' years! BUT.... there might be something *useful* in there....! [gulp]
Not just that, a lot of the stuff today is produced to break and not being repairable. Years ago, my car broke down and the mechanic said, I can't do much, I need the proper program, it's so hard nowadays, if you don't know that particular car, you can't do anything. It's even worse today.

Not taken as much stuff apart is my guess...
My dad had countless bits - nails, screws, etc.... Used some of them too.... [grin]
Same here. Must have been that age group.

I know!!! What a shocker!
Back then I think the tinkerer habit was a lot easier to get into because of the machines in question. Now it's all plastic garbage and computer bits..

True! Most things these days just aren't fixable any more in the ways they used to be. Too much designed obsolescence.
Of course, they earn more if we have to buy something new.
