Watched the HOW FEW REMAIN video today. Strange to think it's been 18 years since I read that series. I imagine I'd respond to it very differently today -- back then I was very much for the USA and its Prussianized military, and I loathed the Mormons fighting for independence. These days I imagine I'd side with the Mormons. XD
[grin] I remember enjoying it a great deal. I do love a bit of Alt-History as long as its plausible.
Although I don't agree with everything he says - he's *definitely* to my Right politically - I think it'd be interesting to be able to sit down and have a long chat with him. He comes across as reasonable and more interested in discussing things than winning arguments or proving he's right about something. Plus he's obviously a BIG SF fan... so there's that!
Well, that came across in Turtledove's writing at the time -- Douglas meeting Stonewall Jackson and being disturbed by the fact that a good, convivial man could have ideas that were, to Douglass, not just incorrect but reprehensible.

Indeed. As I've said about Jean-Jacques Rousseau 'even bastards have good ideas'.
