Well, some people don't want to understand it. They take everything at face value, except for what they don't want to like.

I've never read it, but I understand that quite a few people get the intent & message wrong.

I did read it, so I can tell people off if they misinterpret something.
Did you watch West Wing? There is such a great story about someone quoting the bible just the way they like it. If not, here is the scene on YouTube:

Just hilarious! The writers of West Wing had not written this but had heard it somewhere and asked the originator whether they could use it.

I didn't watch The West Wing, but I have seen that *excellent* clip quite a few times! I could never wrap my head around the whole Old Testament/New Testament thing.... Although the OLD Testament is *OFTEN* used in this sort of blatant hypocrisy, I would've assumed that the NEW Testament (by its very name) superseded the OLD one.... Or am I being too logical or legalistic? Maybe I should read something about it... [muses]

In a way, you are right. There are different denominations who don't even acknowledge the Old Testament, others (like Catholicism) take it as a foundation of Christianity (which it is), for the Jews, the first five books are the Torah, the basis of their religion.

I'll see about picking up some basic introductory books on the subject to see if I can wrap my head around it!

That's probably better than reading the whole book.

Even when I still had faith, I did not accept anything at face value. I still believed in science and evolution and that lgbtqia+ people should be loved and valued like everyone else. I don't understand anyone who can think that the flood really happened, or that dinosaurs didn't exist, or that earth is only 7,000 years old. Like, please. Be so for real.

No, we should not take it at face value. Even my parents didn't.
