I have a very vivid memory of watching my grandmother go outside, grab a chicken at my great grandmother’s house, chop it’s head off, dip it in boiling water, then gut and defeather it, before teaching me how to make chicken and biscuits on my great grandmother’s cast iron stove. She was very matter of fact that his is just what you do to feed yourself. I grew up watching deer get gutted and the meat processed so I wasn’t as shocked as I could have been. But it’s still a vivid memory.

I *bet* it was vivid! We're not long separated from when that sort of thing was VERY normal.
