My ex asked me when our daughter was a baby what I wished for her. I said I wished she would be happy in her life. He said, "that's not asking for very much." I asked him, "how many people do you know who are truly happy?" He made no further comment. Now I'm thinking I should have examined his silence a little closer. ;-)

Really? He said that? What did he hope for instead: Rich? Successful? Popular? But *not* happy? That really doesn't make much sense.....

I liked the old riddle about the choice between being happy, wealthy or wise. I always chose wise - because with wisdom you can be happy and wealthy too!

Yeah, he actually said that. But this was coming from a man who has never been happy a day in his life. He's a very negative person suffering from depression and denial. I've learned to be happy with whatever I've got during feast and famine. M says I'm a very stoic personality. I don't think she means it like a follower of the philosophy, so much as I go with the flow and try not to get too worked up over life's major events.

Rolling with it is the best (and probably only) thing we can do.

It's certainly Stoic-ish.
