I noticed in a few places here someone had the bright idea to build outside escalators..... They didn't last for very long. Things like that tend to fail a LOT in the cold & rain.
I do LOVE the flat ones in airport terminals though. They SO reminded me of the moving sidewalks in early Robert Heinlein stories.

@ Sarah: Maybe they didn't want to get all sweaty and out of breath *before* they hit the gym - makes 'em look bad.
That is truly the only (il)logical explanation...
